Revealed after 50 years: The secret of the greatest-ever student prank

It was probably the most ingenious student prank of all time.

In June 1958, Cambridge awoke to see a car perched at the apex of an inaccessible rooftop, looking as if it were driving across the skyline.

The spectacle made headlines around the world and left police, firefighters and civil defence units battling for nearly a week to hoist the vehicle back down before giving in and taking it to pieces with blowtorches.

Anywhere for a parking space: The students perched the Austin Seven on the top of the Senate House roof

The then Dean of Caius, the late Rev Hugh Montefiore, had an inkling who was responsible and sent a congratulatory case of champagne to their staircase, while maintaining in public he knew nothing of the culprits. Unsurprisingly given their inventiveness, many of the group went on to enjoy illustrious careers - and Caius officials said the ' renegades' had turned into generous benefactors of the college.

Scientists believe Mars lander exposed ice crumbs

clipped from news.yahoo.com
This color image released by NASA and acquired by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander's Surface Stereo Imager on Friday, June 13, 2008, shows one trench informally called 'Dodo-Goldilocks' after two digs on June 12, by Phoenix's Robotic Arm. Shallow trenches excavated by the lander's backhoe-like robotic arm have turned up specks and at times even stripes of mysterious white material mixed in with the clumpy, reddish dirt. LOS ANGELES - Scientists believe NASA's Phoenix Mars lander exposed bits of ice while recently digging a trench in the soil of the Martian arctic, the mission's principal investigator said Thursday.

Crumbs of bright material initially photographed in the trench later vanished, meaning they must have been frozen water that vaporized after being exposed, Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, said in a statement.

"These little clumps completely disappearing over the course of a few days, that is perfect evidence that it's ice," Smith said. "There had been some question whether the bright material was salt. Salt can't do that."

Phoenix Mars is studying whether the arctic region of the Red Planet could be habitable. The probe is using its robotic arm to dig up soil samples, and scientists hope it will find frozen water.

Firefox 3 Download Day Announced: Tuesday, June 17

firefoxlogo.jpgIt’s official: Firefox 3 will arrive Tuesday, June 17. The Mozilla Developer News blog posted the announcement this morning, saying that “after more than 34 months of active development, and with the contributions of thousands, we’re proud to announce that we’re ready.”

Of course there’s always the chance a show-stopping bug will be discovered before then, which could cause a delay. Already a major bug was found in the Mac version which necessitated a third release candidate for Mac users.

But barring the unforeseeable, Firefox 3 should be available to the public early next week. As part of the release Mozilla is pushing for a “Firefox Download Day” when millions of users will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours.

If you were planning a great Firefox nerd party, you have your date.

A Forgotten Anniversary

Tom, a loving husband, was in trouble. He had forgotten his wedding anniversary and his wife was really ticked off at him. She told him, "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in under six seconds, AND IT BETTER BE THERE."

The next morning, Tom got up really early. When his wife woke up a couple of hours later, she looked out the window, and there was a small gift-wrapped box sitting in the middle of the driveway.

Confused, the wife put on her robe, ran out to the driveway, and took the box into the house. She opened it, and found a brand new bathroom scale.

Tom is not yet well enough to have visitors.
